I never thought that I could be impressed with chalk, but Friction Labs has proved me wrong by setting the bar high with their supreme quality chalk. To be honest, I never thought much about chalk. It was not something that I thought could be improved. For me, it was just about making sure the chalk had no drying agents in it.
When Friction Labs gave me the opportunity to test out their chalk I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I wasn’t aware that you could refine the science of chalk making.
Boy was I mistaken.
I new I was in for something different the moment I first chalked with their famous Unicorn Dust. The chalk felt noticeably different on my skin, I just wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing yet.
It felt very smooth and light and removed the sweat from the palms of my hands. I want to say it dried out my hands, but those words seem so harsh. It’s almost like my skin felt dry from being aired out as opposed to from moisture being sucked out, if that makes any sense. Even though the chalk felt great on my hands, I wasn’t used to the feeling and was a little concerned because I thought that maybe it was the work of a drying agent in the chalk that would eventually dry and crack my skin and cause it to bleed.
Anyways, I chalked up and decided to hop on this slopey and pinchy problem that I had been working at the gym with no success whenever I tried to stick the move to the sloper. Well, first attempt and BOOM, I stick the sloper! Yes, I may have fallen making the last move, but wow, that was awesome! Third attempt and I sent the problem.
I was impressed. So the chalk felt great and help me stick better too. My only concern at this point was whether or not the chalk had drying agents. I had to know so I emailed Friction Labs and this was their response:
“No, we put no drying agents in our chalk. We found that stuff really messed up our skin and often just led to more sweating in the long run. Our chalk is pure magnesium carbonate – the reason it feels different is because the chemical purity of the magnesium carbonate is way higher than what you find in other chalks. It was a challenge to figure out a way to get really high quality magnesium carbonate that still had a good texture to it (the higher the chemical purity, the more it feels like you’re just putting your hand in a very fine powder that feels like a cloud, which climbers tend to not like), but we think we did it!”
You bet you did it! Kudos Friction Labs.
You’ve set the bar high. I think anyone that tries it will get hooked.
I’ve tried it both indoors and out, and love how long it lasts on my hands! Even when I get sweaty my hands don’t sweat through the chalk as fast as they used to with other chalk. That blows my mind. No more need to chalk up multiple times, although that might be a hard habit to break. 😉
